Italian Ecological Restoration Network – The Survey

Ecological restoration is defined by the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) as the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. The recent approval of the Nature Restoration Law by the European Union Council, the growing interest in ecological restoration practices, and the diversity of stakeholders involved presents a new scenario.

In this context, the creation of an Italian network for ecological restoration could help promote best practices and ensure that restoration activities are carried out in accordance with SER Standards.

Vision and Purpose

The Italian Ecological Restoration Network aims to promote best practices in ecological restoration, ensure that restoration activities in Italy are enhanced to meet the goals of the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, and are based on the aforementioned best practices, aligned with the SER Standards, and contribute to the outcomes of the Tartu Declaration SERE2024.

This network sets the following objectives:

(short-term)
  • Identify professionals (both in the scientific and practical fields) and students involved in various aspects of ecological restoration;
  • Identify degree programs in Italy that currently include courses related to ecological restoration and that allow access to public competitions;

(medium-term)
  • Collect and adapt existing best practices in ecological restoration and nature conservation applicable to ecosystems within the national territory;
  • Translate SER Standards (and other reference documents) into Italian to facilitate their dissemination at all levels and their use by restoration practitioners;

(long-term)
  • Address the knowledge and collaboration gap between researchers, professionals, and policymakers;
  • Facilitate networking, collaboration, and knowledge transfer between sectors and stakeholders involved;
  • Assist in the preparation of the National Restoration Plan and other relevant regulations to ensure a broad and diverse consultation process in its design;
  • Develop evaluation and certification mechanisms for the implementation phases of the Plan through lasting monitoring and certification programs;
  • Represent our country in national and international discussions regarding ecological restoration.

With this short survey (about 5 minutes), we would like to gauge interest in joining this network and begin to develop a database of expertise related to ecological restoration in Italy.
