“Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Renewal”: A proGIreg Book on Sustainable Urban Regeneration

The 13th of May 2025 will see the publication of the volume Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Renewal in Post-Industrial Cities, which gathers the experiences and insights gained during the European project Horizon 2020 proGIreg. This project, which involved several cities in Europe and Asia, focused on the application of nature-based solutions (NbS) as a tool for urban renewal, particularly in post-industrial areas.

The cities studied and involved include prominent locations such as Germany, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Portugal, Romania, and China. In each of these locations, nature-based solutions have been implemented to address common challenges, such as the rehabilitation of degraded areas, the management of natural resources, and the promotion of environmental sustainability.

The volume provides an in-depth view of the key impacts of NbS on crucial areas such as social innovation, the circular economy, biodiversity, and health. The book explores not only the environmental benefits but also the socio-economic benefits resulting from the application of green solutions in cities. Aiming to clarify how these practices can effectively contribute to improving urban life quality, the book also includes a range of practical tools and lessons learned that can be useful for urban planners, researchers, and policymakers.

Contributions from Politecnico di Torino, University of Bari, and University of Torino enrich the volume, offering field-experienced knowledge and insights. Their research and projects have had a direct impact on promoting more sustainable urbanization and creating more resilient communities.

The book will be available in Open Access on Taylor & Francis, allowing a global audience to access the collected knowledge for free. It will also be distributed under a CC-BY 4.0 license, enabling free sharing and use of the material for educational and research purposes.

With this publication, proGIreg offers an important contribution to the international debate on nature-based solutions, reaffirming the need to adopt innovative and sustainable approaches to tackle the challenges of climate change and urban renewal.
