The European Union is working to reach an agreement on crucial decisions during the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) in Rome, including resource mobilization, the monitoring framework, and the review procedures for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The goal is to stop and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
The EU is a major provider of biodiversity funding, with a commitment to doubling its international support, and aims to mobilize resources from both public and private sources. Success in Rome will be an important step in promoting a “nature-positive” economy and addressing global challenges related to biodiversity and climate change.
The previous COP16, held in Cali, Colombia, was the first time that countries gathered after the signing of the Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022, and since then, many advances have been made. After the session in Rome, the next Conference of the Parties will be held in 2026 in Yerevan, Armenia.
