The first meeting to launch the project “Increasing Coastal Resilience in the Mekong Delta through Mangrove Restoration and Hybrid Nature-based Solutions” was held in Bac Lieu Province, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF). This three-year project aims to combat coastal erosion, a growing threat to the Mekong Delta, one of Vietnam’s most productive regions.
Traditional interventions, such as the construction of concrete breakwaters, are costly and risky, whereas this project adopts a different, sustainable, and cost-effective approach. It proposes ecological restoration of mangroves, essential for coastal protection, and the integration of low-impact aquaculture systems. The goal is to create a balance between nature conservation and the economic development of local communities.
Training, technical assistance, and equipment will be provided to 45 households currently managing 18 hectares of mangroves located behind the sea dike. Active community involvement is essential for the project’s success.
This project represents a significant opportunity for the future of the Mekong Delta. Through initiatives like this, it is possible to combine environmental protection with economic development, ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come. With the support of local authorities and the active engagement of residents, new hopes for the coastal resilience of the region are emerging.
At the end of the meeting, participants visited two shrimp farms located within the mangroves, identified as potential testing sites for the project. These facilities are situated in the Vinh Hau community in Hoa Binh District, about 20 km from Bac Lieu City.
