Nuovo impianto agrivoltaico a Montalto di Castro: Collaborazione tra Plenitude e Infrastrutture S.p.A.

Plenitude and Infrastrutture S.p.A., through the joint venture Hergo Renewables, have built a 37 MW agrivoltaic plant in the municipality of Montalto di Castro (Viterbo), Lazio. The plant is now operational and will produce over 70 GWh of electricity per year, meeting the energy needs of more than 22,000 households*. This project is a strategic element in expanding Plenitude’s renewable energy portfolio in Italy, which now exceeds 1 GW of installed capacity. The initiative is part of a broader development plan that includes solar projects in both Italy and Spain, under the leadership of Hergo Renewables.

Collaboration with the National Biodiversity Future Centre

During the project’s development, Hergo Renewables collaborated with the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC), coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR), to ensure biodiversity protection in the involved area. The NBFC, the first Italian research center on biodiversity funded by NextGenerationEU, focuses on the conservation, restoration, monitoring, and enhancement of Italian and Mediterranean biodiversity. The center involves about 2,000 scientists and 48 academic and research institutions, including the Ministry of University and Research, the University of Tuscia, the University of Pavia, and La Sapienza.

Institutional Statements

Paolo Bellucci, Head of Renewable Energy at Plenitude in Italy, stated:

“The activation of the Montalto di Castro plant is an important milestone for Plenitude, strengthening our commitment to the renewable sector in Italy. This project aligns with our strategy to reach 10 GW of installed capacity by 2028.”

Pier Francesco Rimbotti, CEO of Hergo Renewables, added:

“This plant will generate clean energy for over 22,000 Italian households. Furthermore, it marks the first step of our collaboration with CNR and NBFC. Together with the University of Tuscia, we will explore nature-based solutions to better integrate the plants into the territory.”*

Maria Chiara Carrozza, President of CNR, stated:

“The agrivoltaic plant in Montalto di Castro is a perfect example of synergy between technological innovation and environmental sustainability. CNR and NBFC are pleased to apply their scientific expertise to a project that promotes the coexistence of energy production and biodiversity conservation.”
