Environmental Restoration in Aileu: Harvesting the Fruit of Hope

The municipality of Aileu, with about 55,000 inhabitants, is located in the northwestern mountainous region of East Timor and has long been characterized by deforestation, landslides, erosion, and food insecurity. The Remexio Subdistrict is one of the target areas for the implementation of a climate change adaptation strategy, which includes the restoration of water sources, environmental rehabilitation, and the creation of a sustainable food system.

The Permatil Timor-Leste project, implemented and funded by the Kiwa Initiative, aims to improve resilience to climate change through water resource management and environmental rehabilitation. In 2025, 2,760 trees for water conservation and fruit-bearing purposes were distributed to 63 families in the area. Some were planted near the springs, while others were planted in home gardens. Community members have been enthusiastic about the idea and hope that these trees will be fruitful in the future.

The project is funded by various international entities, including the European Union and the Australian Government, and involves collaboration with organizations such as the Pacific Community (SPC) and IUCN.
